Big news! This year, A.K. Barcelona falls on HALLOWEEN NITE, October 31. The next day is a holiday and this night promises to be da bomb; thus the show will move to the BIG CLUB upstairs so everyone can fit!  Start thinking of disguises!

More details of A.K. Halloween in Barcelona:

1) in spite of the extravagance of the evening, the ticket price will remain the same: 8€ as always. As an extra courtesy for just that night, your ticket will get you a free mixed drink (instead of just beer). Awesomeness!

2) In addition to our talented action-photographer Marco Quiroga Marazzato, we’ll have a special photo-booth where photographer Desi Estévez will be taking portraits of everyone in their lovely costumes, at no additional cost. We’ll upload these photos to the A.K. Facebook page, and you can download them from there.

Doors will open at 9:00 pm. Since we expect a lot of people, the show will start at 9:30 pm on the dot, so please be prompt, especially if you want to sign up to sing!

Tickets can be purchased at the door when doors open at 9; since the club is so big, there is little chance of hitting the legal limit of people, so no one has to worry about being turned away. The idea has always been to have more interaction between all of us regarding the shows, and we believe that keeping it on the Facebook page is the easiest, fastest, and simplest way to do it. Like it or not, the truth is that the A.K. Facebook page is where people talk to one another, and not the Chronicle. We will also be more involved in making the page more active, up-to-date (instead of having to wait nearly a week for the Barcelona chronicle and a month for the Madrid chronicle), and exciting. We know that some of you enjoyed the chronicle, but we think it’s important to get the information to you quicker and making the post-show wrap-up more active and interesting.

Summer is ending but you wouldn’t notice that at Anti-Karaoke.  The evening of August the 29th was another incredible night with all the spirit, chaos and rock’n’roll we expected. We saw great performances from the show’s regulars, big comebacks, and the Anti-Karokean virgins deserve a special mention this Monday; they were truly impressive.

Rachel started off the show with a classy “Stray Cat Strut” and followed it up with Johnny Thunders’ kitschy hit “Pirate Love”.

One of the best debuts that we saw this week came from an Australian girl named Natasha.  Her version of “Ballroom Blitz” was one of the high points in a spectacular night.

Criptococo debuted on the Apolo 2 stage tonight with a fierce interpretation of Pantera’s “A New Level” and raised the bar for all metal songs.  His energy and power was more characteristic of an A.K. veteran than a newcomer.

Riccardo also made his debut this Monday with a fun performance of “Livin’ on a Prayer”.  Through the years, we’ve seen a thousand attempts from newbies and regulars to sing Bon Jovi’s greatest hit and this one ranks among my favorites.

Ennio From Rome & Duro de Oído gave us the surprise duet of the season.  A more unlikely pair would be hard to imagine but they devastated with R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion”.

Dermot contributed an elegant performance of “That’s Life”.  He’s a singer that really knows how to capture the essence of Sinatra.  He’s got great stage presence and a charming voice.

Muse’s “Uprising” is one of the newest songs in the repertoire but it took only a very short time to become a total hit with the crowd. This time, it was Prades who chose it and he did a great job.  For me, it was one of the best moments of the evening.

Kalamardo and friends offered a very fun interpretation of EMF’s “Unbelievable”, a song I’d love to hear more at the show.  Sending shout outs to some Anti-Karaokean stars like Lion King, Duro de Oído and Fabri was a nice touch.

The lyrics of “Delilah” have got to be among the most shocking and violent in the Anti-Karaokean repertoire.  In spite of that, it’s a song that sounds festive and happy.  This time, José Maria sang it with his usual warmth.

Rachel’s right: If you don’t know this song, you’re ignorant.  “Rockin’ in the Free World” should be an Anti-Karoakean anthem but with so many lyrics, there are few singers who dare to sing it. Rachel got the crowd going as she expertly sang and threw out slices of Bimbo bread.

Asking me to chose the A.K. performance that was my favorite from the evening of August 22nd is like making me pick which child I love most or which dessert is the most delicious.  It’s simply impossible.  Each performance has its own special charm and each performer brings something unique to the few moments they have on stage. For an incredible summer night at Anti-Karaoke, we expect nothing less than an astonishing show with an enthusiastic crowd and a few surprises.  No better or worse, just three solid hours of awesome.

A great start to the madness tonight.  Rachel, proudly rocking her Native American headdress, gave us a majestic interpretation of Paul Revere & the Raiders’ “Indian Reservation”.

I don’t know when I’ve seen a crowd surrender so completely during a song as this evening with Jen’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart”.  Looking out at the almost 400 people in the club, all with their hands in the air, was an image I won’t soon forget.  Definitely a highlight in her A.K. career.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” is a tried and true A.K. hit but tonight, Dani Metal brought his magical voice to Queen’s greatest hit and had the crowd in the palm of his hand.  We’ve come to expect excellence from this Anti-Karaokean star and he delivered in full.

I was completely floored this week by Solo’s song choice; it’s not every day that one of the Anti-Karaoke crooners picks a Nirvana cover to sing.  He was very moving with his rendition of  Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World”.

In a completely different register but equally impressive tonight was Drowning Pool’s “Bodies” provided by Lady Mouth.  This lady is usually all performance art, costume and shock but this time she gave us a clean and straightforward performance that was brutal in its simplicity and in my opinion, one of her best at A.K.

Jade lightened up the mood in the club with her brilliant “Walking on Sunshine”.  She’s what I like to call a “total performer”, offering not just her great voice, but also some booty shaking and that charming connection with the audience everytime she sings.

Rocko is another Anti-Karaokean star who is capable of showing us his soul on stage.  Just when we think we’ve seen it all, he finds a new way to delight us.  This time, it was with E.L.O.’s “Don’t Bring Me Down” that he made us fall in love with him.

Rachel opened fire in Apolo 2 with Nirvana’s version of “The Man Who Sold the World”.  Then as a prequel to the energetic performances we would witness during the rest of the show, she offered a festive version of Republica’s “Ready to Go”.

One of the most memorable duets of the evening was the appearance of The Blackhearts. Their performance of “Do You Wanna Touch Me”, perfectly planned with matching outfits, choreography with chairs and bursting sensuality, was one of the best interpretations of this Joan Jett song I’ve seen at Anti-Karaoke.

Ennio From Rome’s performances are always memorable.  On this occasion, he brought his alter ego, his “brother”, to debut Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus”.  It was fantastic and we loved the wig.

We were thrilled to welcome Mr. Brave back to the show with his performance of Judas Priest’s “Breaking the Law”.  With that incredible voice and his charisma, he’s one of the performers we’d like to see more of on the Apolo 2 stage.

Another big comeback, Madskoti’s, was celebrated with a passionate interpretation of “Bohemian Rhapsody” that the whole club sang along with.  He’s a great singer and he radiates personality.

The devil himself assumed control of Xavi Dimoni this Monday to sing another Queen song: “Stone Cold Crazy”.  Demon possession really suits him.  It was one of the most fun unexpected moments of the night.

Rocksales stood out this week for his astonishing interpretation of Sweet’s “Ballroom Blitz”.  He’s the perfect singer at A.K. to do justice to this little sung song.

In the first half of the show, dressed in a new pink corset and Native American headdress, Rachel interpreted one of the new songs in the Anti-Karaoke repertoire: “Angry Inch” from the musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”.   I foresee that in a short time, this will become one of the popular songs at A.K.

In a change of register for him, El Barón de la Birra invoked all of his energy to offer us an incredible “Self Esteem”.  It was a fun performance and it showed us he has talent for singing more than just metal.

Ninjazz came back to the show to get the crowd going with “Song 2”.  When a performer who is really into it sings this song, I always wish it could be longer.  That was the case tonight.

With all the fury we’ve come to expect from him, Iván hit us with a forceful interpretation of “Enter Sandman”.  He is one of the best performers to capture the dark energy of this Metalica song.

Speaking of powerful performances, we have to mention the unexpected duet between Duro de Oído and Johnny Destiny of Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy”.  We still haven’t heard many versions of this song at A.K. but a more intense one would be difficult to imagine.

It was another steamy summer night at Anti-Karaoke this past Monday, August 8^th.  Nothing can top the feeling of seeing 400 people, most of them new to the show, rocking out for three hours together. The ladies really came out in full force this evening. It was impressive to see so many of our favorite gals giving their all.   Add a couple of amazing debuts, a few long-awaited comebacks, and some moments of total chaos and you’ve got the makings for an incredible night.

As a contrast to some of the crazier performances to come later in the evening, Rachel kicked things off with Garbage’s “Stupid Girl”.  Bowie fans got an early treat today with her second song: “Starman”.

We were delighted to welcome back one of the Anti-Karaokean stars we hadn’t seen in months: Our very own Hana Monk.  As one of the A.K. singers with the most vocal power, she’s the perfect person to sing the challenging hits of Muse.  Tonight she chose “Plug In Baby” to showcase her talent and the crowd was left speechless.  Welcome home!

It was also great to see Jade perform again at A.K.  Her natural style and exuberance make it impossible to take your eyes off her when she’s singing.  Tonight was no exception with her energized “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?”.

A big surprise towards the end of the show this evening was Leonie’s performance of “Sweet Child O’Mine”.  I’ve never seen a rookie sing that song with so much power in their voice and confidence in their presence.  It’s a real shame this was a one-night stand.  We would love to see her again.

Two sweet girls calling themselves Savage Puttys debuted this evening with a cute rendition of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer”.

Reaffirming her status as an Anti-Karaokean star, Maggie Simpson came back to Apolo 2 this evening to offer another entertaining performance, this time of Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out”.  Despite its simple appearance, this is one of the hardest songs in the A.K. repertoire to sing but she didn’t let anything stop her from having a great time on that stage.

Apolonia made her debut on the A.K. stage this Monday, dedicating Little Eva’s “The Loco-Motion” to the bartending staff of Apolo 2.

Hof Cohen also debuted tonight.  What a smile on this guy!  It was magical to watch him sing Queen’s “Show Must Go On” with so much optimism and spark.

Nur n’Roses lit up the stage tonight as well with her surprise comeback performance of GNR’s “Paradise City”.  It’s great to have her back in the show.

A surprise duet tonight between Rachel and Dermot with “New York, New York”.  It was the perfect classy moment, with Rachel pouring out the Jack Daniels and Dermot singing the verse to this A.K. standard.

“Enter Sandman” is a fairly well worn Anti-Karaoke hit as well.  This time, Kenta managed to bring something fresh to the song with his famous combination of attitude and charm.  I haven’t enjoyed this number so much in weeks.

Also bringing something fresh to the table this week was Johnny Destiny.   “March of the Pigs” isn’t a song we get to hear every night at the show and I was surprised and pleased that he chose to tackle it this time.  Amazingly commanding performance.

Another great song choice for Powerpuff Ale & Oscarzombie this week.  In their duets, they always manage to pick songs that complement both of their unique styles.  This time it was Lordi’s “Hard Rock Hallelujah” that impressed us.

The incredibly impressive Rocksales gave us another of his unmistakable vocally perfect interpretations this evening with Led Zeppelin’s “The Immigrant Song”.  Not an easy feat by any means, and he did an amazing job.

Lion King also delivered a forceful performance this evening with one of his best songs: Metallica’s “Sad But True”.  It’s always impressive to notice from week to week how he can shift between charming ballads to hard core metal.  That, my friends, is talent.

The A.K. of August the 1^st was the night we’d all been waiting for.  The arrival of the summer holidays brought tons of folks to Apolo 2 and with them, massive amounts of energy and attitude.  Tonight, we saw a few great comebacks of Anti-Karaokean stars, some debuts of new songs, more than a few amazing newcomers and of course, what kick ass night at Anti-Karaoke would be complete without a little crowd surfing?

At 10pm on the dot when Rachel sang the first number of the evening, the mellow and stamina-testing “Midnight Radio” from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, we had no way of knowing what would be in store for us over the following three hours.  Mass hysteria was about to break lose and there we were, lifting up our hands and singing along with this seemly innocent chorus.

Call it nostalgia, but for me, the undisputed high point of this incredible evening was Ennio From Rome’s surprising debut of R.E.M.’s “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)”.  There’s no better A.K. star to baptize a new 80’s alternative song than our beloved Ennio.  He gave another brilliant performance that left us all hoping for just one more day…and just one more minute of him dancing on stage.

If beautiful dancing girls are your thing (and don’t be silly, of course they are), you would have gone crazy for Lady Mouth & Lady Piño’s breathtaking interpretation of Europe’s “The Final Countdown”. I’ve never been so totally impressed by a performance featuring dance at the show.  Their 1950’s look and contemporary choreography were a striking contrast for this cliché 80’s song.  Amazing ladies.

A lovely surprise this week was seeing Gerard perform again at the show.  He must have been glad to be back as well; I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so into his performance as when he was singing The Darkness’ “I Believe In a Thing Called Love” tonight.  His charming smile didn’t fade for even a moment during his song and he had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand with his stunning falsetto.

This week there was a trio of A.K. rookies that completely floored us.  We don’t know where they came from or when they’ll be back but one thing was certain: this wasn’t their first time performing to a crowd like this.

The first newbie to impress us was Madzila who gave us a visceral performance of Slade’s version of Quiet Riot’s “Cum On Feel the Noize”.  After his unexpected debut, we were ready to believe that all newcomers to the show would be that electrifying.

And then came The White Obama.  He raised the debut standard tonight with his ridiculously energetic “Gay Bar” which ended in an unexpected striptease, revealing his fondness for cross-dressing.  It was an absolutely hilarious performance.

Last, but certainly not least in this group of guys was Martín with one of the more current songs in the A.K. repertoire: The Stroke’s “Reptilia”. He’s got a great voice and showed some real talent working the crowd.

When you step on the A.K. stage for the first time, it doesn’t always go so smoothly though.  Remember that if you lose your place, the audience will support you no matter what and scream the lyrics until you find it again.  Kudos to Klara for getting up to sing “Come As You Are” tonight without puking or passing out in spite of her nerves.  Of the nearly 400 people in the crowd this Monday, how many actually had the guts to do that?

Rachel reminded us to eat our carbs as she threw out seasoned slices of Bimbo bread and sang a delirious “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC.  Tonight more than any other, this was true.

Don’t think I’ve forgotten about some of the most powerful metal performances of the night.  Over the years, Anti-Karaoke has taught many a pop fan how to love Pantera, Metallica and more recently, System Of A Down.  (My previously ignorant self included.)  It’s great to see folks that you know weren’t fans before singing along with songs like “Enter Sandman” and “Chop Suey!”.

The chameleon award of the week goes to our own Prades for completely shocking us with his brilliant performance of Pantera’s “Fucking Hostile”.  Where did all that rage come from?  Totally believable.  Great job.

Have you ever been not paying attention when a singer starts the song and thought “Shit, this person can really sing!  Who IS this?”.  This week, it happened to me with Whiplash.  When he started singing “The Number of the Beast”, I couldn’t place his voice but it got my attention.  You sounded like a pro tonight.

To celebrate her birthday, the gorgeous Sofix with her enviable smoky voice, performed a commanding “Sad But True”.  Is there anything better in the world than an engaging woman belting out a metal song with all the force of any male performer?

Anti-Karaoke also has its softer side.  Xavi Dimoni, YouTube Superstar, is one of the best A.K. performers to show it to us.  This time, he chose Chris Isaac’s “Wicked Game” to showcase his impressive vibrato.

Three of the best comebacks of the week were Albert the Undertaker, CNN and el Pirata del Caribe.  These guys top the list of A.K. stars we miss when they aren’t able to grace the Apolo stage with their presence.

The Ramones are always a hit at Anti-Karaoke.  This evening, Alex & Marian chose to debut with a lively performance of “The KKK Took My Baby Away”.

Speaking of spirited performances, we’ve come to expect a certain level vivacity from Kenta; he didn’t let us down this Monday with the Pixies’ “Debaser”.  The crowd surfing was a nice touch.  Not everyone is a fan of Frank Black but how can you not love Kenta singing his songs?

Jentonic showed us some attitude this Monday with their interpretation of “Bulls On Parade”.  It was one of the most memorable duets of the evening, featuring Jen’s crowd surfing and great stage chemistry. The evening of the July 25th was another night full of shining Anti-Karaokean stars.  We saw the big comebacks of a few A.K. greats, some entertaining duets and of course a few well-planned surprises (cross-dressing, choreography and a chance to save our souls, just to name a few).

Rachel started the party with “Ziggy Stardust”.  To set a country tone, she followed it up with “D.I.V.O.R.C.E.”

The big stars of the week were Powerpuff Ale and Oscarzomibe with their exciting duet of Alien Ant Farm’s cover of “Smooth Criminal”.  They thought of everything to make their performance memorable including Michael Jackson costumes and choreography.  That, folks, is entertainment.

In one of the most emotional 3 minutes I’ve ever experienced at Anti-Karaoke, Rocko delivered an amazing performance of The Rolling Stones’ “Angie”.   It’s hard to think of a more moving interpretation in the show’s history.

Ruth returned to the show to shine some light in our lives with her bright personality and voice.  Her “Walking On Sunshine” was an illuminating and high-energy moment in the evening.

An Anti-Karaokean newbie that really impressed us this week was Desi.  Without a moment’s hesitation, she took the stage and quickly won our hearts with her pure attitude “I Love Rock’n’Roll”.

Rocking her new Marilyn meets Medusa look, Rachel hypnotized the crowd with a deadly “Are You Gonna Be My Girl”.

Lion King’s female alter-ego, Lion Queen, returned tonight, accompanied by the Lionettes to perform a fun version of Aretha Franklin’s “Think”.  Love the dress, love the hair, especially love the pink eye lashes.  You are stunning.

In one of the most out-of-control moments of the night, Il Banzo and Fabri conquered the stage with Pantera’s “Mouth For War”.  These two men made a perfect pair and it was an absolutely brutal show of chaos.

Among the commanding performers tonight, we have to mention Siol and his massive “Chop Suey!” by System Of A Down.  This A.K. star really gives everything he’s got each week and the crowd is never let down by his performances.

I’ve never seen such an impressively sexy use for the music stand as when Lady Mouth sang this evening.  She could make anything look hot.   And of course, she sang too.  Her version of “Gay Bar” would make any guy switch teams.

One of my favorite moments of the night was the intense duet between La Sevillanita and El Idolo de Argentina.  Two performers with more apposing styles would be hard to find, but they chose the perfect song to reflect both of their strengths: “Under Pressure”, and they were absolutely incredible together.

If you’ve been a regular at Anti-Karaoke for a while, you already know that every Monday night holds something special for you; that’s why we keep coming back week after week.  You never know who will show up, what they’ll bring to the stage or what they’ll wear/not wear/take off.   I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that the evening of July the 18^th was one of the best shows we’ve ever had.  From the high energy level of the audience to the absolutely mind-blowing talent we saw displayed by the performers, tonight was a night that will go down in A.K. history.

To break the ice, Rachel sang a smoldering version of “Queer” by Garbage and followed it up with a sassy “Stray Cat Strut”.  From that moment on, the crowd and the performers kept the show going full throttle.

In a night with so many outstanding performances, there was one in particular that especially stood out.  Without a doubt, the moment that left us all mesmerized came from Duro de Oído.  What could be more “Anti” at Anti-Karaoke than singing a song a cappella?  With a dramatic black stage and only a single spotlight shining, Duro bared his soul to an adoring crowd with an incredibly passionate interpretation of Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz”.

Only a very special performer is capable of being sexy, powerful and hilarious all in the same 3-minute performance.   Tonight, Roser offered something for everybody with one of the most entertaining numbers of the night.  Her interpretation of Wolfmother’s “Woman” was truly something special. She always gives us a good show, but this one ranks among her best ever at A.K.

Another singer who manages to bring something new each time she steps onto the Apolo 2 stage is Powerpuff Ale.  This evening she delighted us with one of the best vocal performances of the week with a lovely “Let It Be”, complete with bubbles and some unexpected harmonica playing.  It was one of the most heartwarming acts I’ve seen at Anti-Karaoke.

What Rocko eats for breakfast, I would like to know.  His energy is unparalleled at A.K. and he never disappoints.  This evening, he slew The Pixies’ “Debaser” and earned a round of thunderous applause.

Singing the song that made me love Pantera, Siol gave us one of the best metal moments of the evening with and attitude-charged “Walk”.

Txus kicked some serious grunge ass tonight with his animated performance of Nirvana’s “On A Plain”.  I can never get enough of this band at A.K. and Txus is the perfect performer to do them justice.

We were happy to welcome Manolo back to Anti-Karaoke.   He made his big comeback with Steppenwolf’s classic “Born to Be Wild”.

In a night full of amazing duets, one of the best was from Los Artistas Anteriormente Conocidos Como Enrique e Iván.  They chose one of the most popular duets in the A.K. repertoire, “Under Pressure”, and gave us stellar performance.

Dressed to kill, or at least maim, Ventura & Bruno, with the aid of Rachel, sang the Stones’ “Paint It Black”.  We appreciated the costume and especially the sword.  Thanks for making the extra effort.

Another newcomer who dressed the part this evening was Istar. Looking good and full of spunk, she sang a version of “Master of Puppets” that was more charming than anything and the crowd loved it.

Also radiating charm this evening was Deirdre.  I always associate The Offspring’s songs at the show with her and tonight she did a great job with “Self Esteem”.

High kicks, feature boa, and Jack Daniels are the recipe for Rachel’s most famous performance: “New York, New York”.  Tonight she splashed a little alcohol on our faces and strutted her stuff, Las Vegas style.

The crowd went crazy tonight for Xavi Dimoni and his theatrical interpretation of George Michael’s “Faith”.

When the audience heard the first notes of “Welcome to the Jungle”, there was a general consensus that the time to rock hard in Apolo 2 had arrived.  Whiplash did not disappoint with his performance.  This was a perfect song to show off his impressive vocal chords.

Rock Queen also displayed her talent to impress with a change of register tonight.  Her performance of “Hopelessly Devoted To You” was a sappy love song with a rock edge.  We’ve loved seeing her these past few weeks at the show and we hope it will be more than just a summer fling.

We’re always ready to rock when Prades steps onto the stage.  This time, he sang Judas Priest’s “Living After Midnight” and I would bet, made some people in the audience question whether they were really going to get up early and go to work the next morning.

Rachel’s first surprising duet of the evening was with the unstoppable Kenta.  The Apolo 2 stage just couldn’t contain their rage and vitality and they exploded onto the bar with a massive “Bulls on Parade”.

Lion King received one of the biggest ovations of the night for his killer “Highway to Hell”.  It’s always amazing to watch the crowd when this guy performs; all hands in the air, screaming the chorus, completely engaged.

On this magical night, Olaia Newton Rocksy transported us away to another land, a land of kitschy songs with beautiful harmonies, with their engaging duet of “Xanadu”.

We were privileged enough to see the classy side of Mazafaka this week.  He gave us a brilliant rendition of Sinatra’s standard: “That’s Life”.

Two sweet Anti-Karaoke virgins named Laura and Victoria gave us a bouncy and fun “Dancing with Myself”.

As the show was reaching its end, Ennio From Rome & Rachel offered us a fabulous performance of “The Pretender”.  At this moment, I think most of the audience would have agreed that they could have kept on going another 3 hours.

And don’t think I forgot about the craziest duet of the night.  Recently arrived from Madrid, Eddie Ramone joined forces with the energetic Kenta to devastate the A.K. crowd with Cheap Trick’s “Surrender”.  These two make a great team on stage and we hope to see them perform again together soon.  Maybe even some double crowd surfing, boys?
